NEWARK, DE - (July 1, 2009) - Mid Atlantic Spine and Pain Physicians (MASPP), the most comprehensive pain practice in the U.S diagnosing and treating spine and pain related disorders, welcome two medical school graduates to its 2009-2010 Fellowship Education in Pain Medicine. Akil S. Benjamin, D.O. and Jimmy M. Henry, M.D. were selected from many applicants to begin 12 months of full-time training in pain medicine at MASPP. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the U.S. MASSP is one of only three ACGME-accredited physiatry fellowship programs. Trained at an ACGME-accredited program is a pre-requisite for becoming board certified in that specialty. Dr. Frank J. E. Falco, Founder, CEO and principal of MASPP, is also the Director of the Physical Medicine Fellowship Program of Temple University School of Medicine.
Dr. Benjamin completed medical school at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Athens, OH and completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Henry completed medical school at University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, IL and completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Temple University Hospital/MossRehab, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Pain medicine is the discipline of medicine that specializes in the management of patients suffering from acute or chronic pain, or pain in patients requiring palliative care. The management of acute and chronic pain syndromes is a complex matter involving many areas of interest and different medical disciplines. Physicians training in pain medicine may originate from different disciplines and approach the field with varying backgrounds and experience. All pain specialists, regardless of their primary specialty, should be competent in pain assessment, formulation, and coordination of a multiple modality treatment plan, integration of pain treatment with primary disease management and palliative care, and interaction with other members of a multidisciplinary team.
