MASPP Opens New Outpatient Surgery Center in Maryland

NEWARK, DE - (September 2, 2008) - Officers from Mid Atlantic Spine and Pain Physicians (MASPP), the most comprehensive pain practice in the U.S diagnosing and treating spine and pain related disorders, opened the doors to its new, state-of-the-art, outpatient surgical center in Elkton, MD - the Delmarva Surgery Center (DSC) - which has been in the works for a few years to meet the growing demand for outpatient procedures. Same day spine surgeries and minimally-invasive back procedures will be the main treatments provided at the center.

"With the growing population in Elkton and surrounding Cecil County, plus the neighboring New Castle and Hartford Counties, individuals coming to us suffering from pain has greatly increased our case load and also driven our need to expand our services," said Frank J. E. Falco, M.D., founder and CEO of Mid Atlantic Spine and Pain Physicians and the Delmarva Surgery Center.

The outpatient surgery center, also referred to as an ambulatory surgery center, will begin providing same-day surgeries and minimally-invasive procedures that does not require patients to have an overnight stay. Each procedure and operating room is equipped with the latest in technology, allowing the physicians and surgeons to perform less invasive procedures, which means less procedure time for the patient. Less time also typically means a faster recover and less chance of infection.

There are plans to add a sleep lab to the Delmarva Surgery Center as a great percentage of patients suffering from pain, approximately two-thirds, also have sleep problems. This can often become a downward cycle. Pain can lead to sleep problems. The lack of restorative sleep in turn can make the pain worse. The lab is planned to open in 2009.
